Your fund vs the category leader
Every fund measured against the best 1-year performer in its own category — so you see the gap, not just the number.
A fund's return means little on its own. A 15% year is mediocre for a small-cap and strong for a large-cap — context is everything. The Compare Returns view supplies that context by pinning every fund against the best 1-year performer in its own category, and showing you the gap.
| Your fund | Rank | 1Y | Category leader | Gap 1Y |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kotak Healthcare Fund Pharma/Healthcare | 2/17 | 18.9 | HDFC Pharma & Healthcare | −0.4 |
| Franklin Asian Equity Fund International | 1/5 | 41.5 | ★ This is the leader | +0.0 |
| PGIM India Healthcare Fund Pharma/Healthcare | 4/17 | 16.2 | HDFC Pharma & Healthcare | −3.1 |
Immediately you learn more than a raw number tells you: Kotak Healthcare is a strong 2nd of 17, trailing the category leader by a whisker (0.4 points). PGIM's healthcare fund, at 16.2%, looks fine in isolation but sits 4th and 3.1 points behind the leader. Franklin Asian Equity is the leader in its (small) category.
An important, deliberate nuance
Here the “leader” is the best 1-year-return performer — not the best by momentum, which is what the main scanner's Peer Rank uses. So a fund can rank differently on this view than on the main list. That's not a bug; it's two honest lenses: raw 1Y outcome here, momentum-adjusted standing there. Returns of 1Y and beyond are annualised (CAGR).
Why compare within category at all
Because category is most of the outcome. Judging a fund against the whole universe rewards whichever category happens to be hot; judging it against its peers isolates what the manager did with the same opportunity set. Our research on how much category decides quantifies exactly that.
Key takeaways
- Every fund is measured against the best 1Y performer in its own category.
- Rank + gap turns a bare return into “how good, relative to what was possible.”
- Leader here = best 1Y return, not best momentum — so it can differ from the main scanner's rank.
- Within-category comparison isolates manager skill from category luck.
- 1Y+ figures are annualised (CAGR).
